Computational Education and Sustainable Development

Special Issue Information:

Dear Colleagues,

Computational education is an emerging interdisciplinary field centered on big data and computational methods, integrating education with computational science. It aims to quantify educational processes, analyze learning behaviors, and optimize educational practices. It brings powerful methodological resources to address major challenges facing education today, including unequal access to knowledge, insufficient precision in educational assessment, and pathways to sustainable educational development.

However, the penetration of computational technology (particularly AI) in education is not a single narrative, but a multi-dimensional process full of contradictions. As UNESCO warned in its 2025 report AI and the Future of Education: Disruptions, Dilemmas and Directions: technology may serve as a tool to promote educational equity, yet it may also exacerbate global inequality; it may reshape the essence of teaching and learning, yet it may also threaten the public nature and humanistic core of education. Data-driven educational decision-making may enhance efficiency, yet it may also oversimplify educational complexity; algorithmic recommendations may personalize learning pathways, yet they may also solidify cognitive biases.

Therefore, we invite researchers and professionals from the fields of education, psychology, and computer technology to contribute their research and experiences, exploring this intersection full of opportunities and challenges from different perspectives.

The proposed themes for this special issue include:

  • Integration of computational thinking and teaching innovation
  • Applications of educational statistics, psychometrics, and machine learning in learning assessment
  • Computational education for promoting educational inclusivity and diversity
  • Computational education pathways for lifelong learning and sustainable development
  • Ethical challenges in educational data mining and learning analytics
  • Computational education management and educational decision support systems

In summary, this special issue aims to serve as a space for reflection and discussion: how computational education can become a catalyst for more inclusive, personalized, and sustainable education, rather than an alienating tool. We invite researchers and educators to publish articles in this special issue. The selected articles will contribute to a broad and in-depth overview of the possibilities, risks, and coping strategies that computational education brings to sustainable development, providing critical yet constructive insights for academia, professionals, and policymakers.
